Amelyn Laro is a multifaceted professional, encompassing roles as a social worker, educator, researcher, and advocate for gender equality. Her extensive travels have taken her across the Philippines and to various countries including Canada, Kazakhstan, Sri Lanka, South Korea, the United States, and Germany where she has dedicated her efforts to addressing gender and women's issues. Her expertise lies in the areas of women's and girls' rights, as well as the plight of refugees and internally displaced persons.
She holds notable distinctions, including being a Community Solutions Fellow through the U.S. Department of State, an ASIAN Gender Trainer via the Korean Institute for Gender Equality Promotion and Education, and a Fellow at the International Sustainability Academy in Hamburg, Germany, for her project "Teach for Gender Equality".
Additionally, she is the visionary behind the Advocacy on Women's Education and Empowerment (AWE) Project, a capacity-building leadership development initiative for young women social work students and professionals in the Davao region of the Philippines. In 2019, she took on the establishment of the Social Work Program at the Southern Philippines Agribusiness Marine and Aquatic School of Technology. In 2023 she launched the project “Teach for Gender Equality” an online and offline project for integrating Gender Responsive Education in the Curriculum.
Amelyn Laro is highly sought after as a resource person and is frequently invited to deliver presentations on gender responsive case management, gender sensitivity, handling violence against women, and creating safe spaces. Her dedication and expertise in these areas have made her a respected figure in her field. Thus, in 2024 she was selected as Fellow for professional development for gender trainers which brought her back to Netherlands.
Her first book, Streets to Horizons: From Street Education to Global Education was published on Amazon. In this book she wrote about her humble beginning as a former street child later turn to be a street educator, social worker, and academician. She was then assigned to work in Kazakhstan as a Social Work Adviser through the Volunteer Service Overseas program tasked with starting a rebuilding program after the Soviet Union broke down in Kazakhstan in 2004-2005.
She also published several research papers related to her field of which can be found in Research Gate and Google Scholar platform. She is also an Associate Member of the National Research Council of the Philippines and Moderator of the Leadership Community of Practice East Asia and the Pacific Community Solutions Program.
