Alberto Portera (Caspe, Zaragoza, 1928-Madrid, 2019) was a prominent neurologist and academic, recognized for his promotion of neurological studies in Spain. With a degree in Medicine, he specialized in Neurology and Psychiatry in the United States, and worked as a researcher and teacher in hospitals such as the Doce de Octubre in Madrid.
In addition to his medical career, Portera was passionate about art and cinema, and maintained a close friendship with the artists of the Spanish Abstract Art Museum in Cuenca.
Between the sixties and eighties, Alberto Portera made films in super-8, featuring his artist and intellectual friends, among them Manolo Millares, Bonifacio Alfonso, Antonio Saura, José Guerrero and Asger Jorn, among others. With a few exceptions, these films have remained in unreleased form until this exhibition.
Through a selection of these films, along with some of the works, writings and documents from his collection, The Portera files reveals the cinematic facet of this intriguing character, and helps to make visible the public context of art in Spain for over three decades.
