The exhibition Encuentros ópticos (Optical encounters) showcases a selection of works by Monika Buch (Valencia, 1936. Lives and works in Utrecht, Netherlands) and Ubay Murillo (Tenerife, 1978. Lives and works in Berlin, Germany), two Spanish artists whose distinct historical backgrounds and personal journeys converge in a shared formal exploration of order, rhythm, and perception. The show features medium and large format paintings, creating a dialogue between Buch’s works —from the 1970s and 1980s— and Murillo’s most recent pieces, from 2024 and 2025.
Monika Buch, trained at the prestigious Hochschule für Gestaltung in Ulm under the influence of the Bauhaus, developed a visual language based on geometric abstraction, structural clarity, and the interaction between color and form. Her work offers a precise reflection on balance and visual perception.
Ubay Murillo approaches his work from a contemporary outlook, blending painting, collage, and assemblage to challenge the codes of representation in the age of digital imagery. His latest pieces reflect a shift towards structure, approached with a more open and experimental sensibility. Focusing on the idea of structure or grid, and how these become more fluid when they intersect with post-capitalism, the exhibition offers an encounter between two perspectives that, though separated by time, share formal concerns and a desire to rethink the visual and social systems that organize us. Optical Encounters thus poses a question: What future awaits our social structures, which once seemed solid?
