This exhibition brings together three artists whose work transcends and expands their materials. Repetition, process, pattern and elegance are combined with bold color, light and shadow, and attention to surface. There is a sense of movement that is created which gives life and vitality to each of the pieces. Many parts work together in unexpected ways to create a vibrant and majestic whole. The work is crisp, playful, unpredictable, and has a powerful presence. Disparate pieces are pulled together forming a new composition and seem to collaborate with the space. Shadows are integral to each of the works, supporting, transforming, and deepening their presence.
Lori Cozen-Geller captures the complexity of emotions of the heart and intricacies of the mind into visual space. Her work has been a beacon with which to transform feelings of love and loss. Weightlessness, perseverance, and connection work together to create a dynamic and serene atmosphere. In Family four white oval shapes sit on the wall above a larger rotated square shape with the same pattern of four shapes ‘cut’ from it. It is as if the pieces were removed and hover next to their previous existence or simultaneously might eventually fit back in. Cozen-Geller states: “There are several components that merge together to form the art. The dimensions of the piece along with the color and finish represent the power of the emotion that the piece was born out of. The decision to use sharp angles versus soft curves is determined by the nature of the emotions that are being represented.” Cozen-Geller lives in Los Angeles with her studio in Venice, CA. She received her BA from the University of Southern California. Her solo exhibitions include Madison Gallery, La Jolla, CA; Russeck Gallery, San Fransicso, CA; and BGH Gallery, Santa Monica, CA.
The sculptures of Matt Devine present a dramatic and powerful congruence of form. His mastery of manipulating the material to do as he wishes is seamless. Numerous pieces fold, twist, arc and tilt. Shadows play with the forms and expand the impact of his work. A minimalistic sensibility and repetition of form create a beautiful sense of balance and harmony. His sculptures rest on walls, floors, and pedestals and also encompass large-scale commissions. Devine was born in Salem, MA. He currently lives and works in Southern California. His museum exhibitions include Oceanside Museum of Art, CA and MCA San Diego. He has had solo exhibitions at Madison Gallery, La Jolla, CA and Laura Rathe Fine Art, Houston, TX. He has many public commissions including Tom Ford Showroom, London, England; El Cruce, Trizetto Corporation, Englewood, Colorado; On the Left Side, New World Development, Ltd. Hong Kong; and Pacific Terrace Hotel, Untitled Brass Entry, Pacific Beach, CA among many others.
An organic sensibility is prominent in Carolina Sardi’s steel wall installations and sculptures. Repeated ovals that sit a few inches from the wall, either painted or raw metal, become delicate tapestries of mathematical pattern. Sardi references geometry and positive and negative space in her search for a balance between opposing forces. Her wall installations seem to float above the surface of the wall and rest on shadow. Space and light around the installations and within her wall sculptures are an important factor in her work and play an integral role. Sardi is an Argentinian sculptor based in Miami, FL. She earned her Masters in Sculpture Degree at the National University of La Plata, Argentina where she also studied Architecture and Urbanism with the artist Enio Iommi. Solo exhibitions include Panamerican Art Projects, Miami, FL; Galerie Lelia Mordoch, Paris, France; Heriard Cimino Gallery, New Orleans, LA. Her work is in collections at the Museum of Art, Fort Lauderdale, FL; P+D Collection, London; and Art Museum of the Americas, Washington D.C.
