Winston Wächter Fine Art is pleased to announce our upcoming group exhibition Signs of life. Signs of life is an evocative group exhibition featuring works by four prominent artists: Mary Finlayson, Barry Johnson, Ethan Murrow, and Tony Scherman. The show delves into themes of identity, perception, and value, exploring how we see ourselves and how we are seen by others. Through still-life paintings, depictions of everyday objects, symbolic imagery, and figurative works, the exhibition invites viewers to reflect on the masks we wear and the images we portray.
Through their unique perspectives, the artists collectively explore what it means to define ourselves and the value we assign to our surroundings. Visitors can expect a thought-provoking journey through narrative, color, and form.
Mary Finlayson: Known for her vibrant celebration of color, pattern, and form, Finlayson's work chronicles the beauty of everyday life. Her background in silkscreen and lithography informs her style, blending a rich sense of design with an appreciation for the aesthetics of the ordinary.
Barry Johnson: An interdisciplinary artist, Johnson’s work confronts the erasure of Black figures in history. Through vivid and dynamic paintings, sculptures, and murals, his pieces challenge notions of identity and belonging while celebrating the power of representation.
Ethan Murrow: Murrow’s graphite drawings and paintings blend pastoral idealism with absurdity. His narratives feature adventurers and dreamers interacting with sublime landscapes, sparking conversations about ambition, conquest, and humanity’s relationship with nature.
Tony Scherman: With nearly five decades of practice, Scherman creates powerful encaustic paintings imbued with romantic symbolism and dramatic intensity. His works weave together historical figures, contemporary culture, and personal mythologies, offering rich and layered interpretations of the human experience.
