Conceived in exclusive for Centro Botín, this is the first exhibition entirely devoted to the work on paper by Manolo Millares (Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, 1921 – Madrid, 1972), and will include some works never exhibited before.
Organised with the support and collaboration of the artist’s family, the show will gather a selection of works on paper which will chronologically survey Millares’ output over his various different periods, those evincing the new concept of drawing that was emerging at the time worldwide, of which Millares would become a highly valued exponent.
Famous for his use of burlap, sackcloth and other materials in his works, this show proposes a chronological walkthrough of his academic beginnings, landscapes with watercolours, surrealist compositions and works influenced by the Guanche culture from the Canary Islands, before focusing on the production developed from 1955 to 1972, with works of great power and originality.
