Mattie Schilders was born in Geertruidenberg (NL) in 1951. He started his training in the Netherlands at the Drawing Accademy in Eindhoven and at the Visual Arts in Tilburg, but the travel in the most remote corners of the world mold his aesthetic taste and his steady research, focused on the four elements: fire, air, water and earth.
As he says: «Penetrating and reading the universal laws governing everything I see regarding the beauty of the landscape has always been a necessity for me. For nearly my whole life as a painter analyzing this has been my main objective».
The Artist is very active and researched throughout Europe, he was chosen by the MAG's Manager announcing the exclusive relationship for the whole of Italy, with his first solo exhibition in our country, because with his informal technique he depicts the figuration and, specifically, the landscape.
As in the most deep Flemish tradition, he paints through glazes, his brushstrokes cross centuries of history until the conquest of the informal; with his personal interpretation of the elements at the root of the universe, as the Sicilian philosopher, Empedocle, claimed in the V century b.C., Schilders is able to create a liquid, elegant and refined atmosphere, a setting that has an high aesthetic equilibrium and sometimes force peaks given by the color or by the strong mark.
In the encounter between the various elements, the combinations most dear to him are evidently those between earth, water and air, and in our region he finds a right natural location to elaborate his feelings.
The exhibition, divided between the MAG of Como and the Grand Hotel Cadenabbia in Griante, on the Como Lake, proposes thirty artworks, that want to represent this last cycle of the Flemish master, made between 2010 and 2013 around the world, and several painted right here on the Lario, in the area of Menaggio. We also organized, on the roof terrace of the Grand Hotel Cadenabbia, three side events to the exhibition, July 17 and 7 and 14 August, during which the Master will be engaged in live painting performances.
