De Plume is excited to host an experiential and immersive installation of intricate, multi-media artwork this August. Appropriately on display during Burning Man season, this is the second floor-to-ceiling installation by psychedelic visionary artist Laurie Shapiro in LA this year.
Shapiro’s solo show “Before You Were Born,” at Radiant Space this past January attracted over 1,000 people to enter the walk-in “womb”. For her latest installation opening August 11 at de Plume, Shapiro creates the sequel to “Before You Were Born.” This new body of work, titled “All Yoni Is Love,” is a series of intricately painted vaginal flowers, humans in mystical environments, hanging orb lights, and reflective painted mylar. In what Shapiro terms a “Yoni State of Mind,” the world is perceived through a creative and embracing lens of elevation. This feminist series celebrates of the beauty and power we have within and between us.
Shapiro’s pieces are meticulously made--each taking hours of labor from hand-sewing to painting. Her work is driven by an insatiable need to inquire about the nature of how we perceive the world. Fascinated by color and process, Shapiro initially builds up her paintings by screen printing stencils of her drawings, then hand sewing the segments on muslin, which she then brings to life with layers of paint. When viewed up close, one can see the intricate details and hand-stitching of her screen printed drawings.
