George Billis Gallery is pleased to present Sea Level, the gallery’s first solo show of noted Southern California artist Audra Weaser. The exhibition features the artist’s new abstract paintings and continues through February 17th.

Nature in an abstracted or reflected state has always been an inspiration for the artist. Weaser writes that her inspiration is “specifically, the moment at which a connection is made between an exterior and inner reality.” Her paintings render this moment in physical form - delicate layers of color emerging in shimmering golds, cool blues, hints of green - the spectrum of colors of light reflecting on water.

The “Sea Level” series of paintings refers literally to the baseline of water from which we can measure other elements. But it also implies the balance between elements; between the earth and sea; between the tangible and the intangible.

Weaser writes of her process, “To achieve this balancing effect, I start by building layers of paint around an axis point. As the composition emerges, I refine it only to obscure it with a veil of white until the initial colors disappear. From there, I excavate through the layers of paint until the effect of light reflected in or shimmering across water is achieved—a moment caught and held in our natural world.”

Audra Weaser was raised in Southern California and lives and works in Los Angeles. She earned her M.F.A in painting from Claremont Graduate University and has exhibited extensively since then. Her work is in private and public collections throughout the world—from New York and San Francisco to Hong Kong, Abu Dhabi and Singapore.
