Garage Museum of Contemporary Art presents the first solo exhibition of Belgian artist Marcel Broodthaers (1924–1976) in Russia.
The show brings together the artist’s key works: from his early objects, films, and fragments of his travelling installation, The Museum of Modern Art, Department of Eagles (1968)—which was a pioneering investigation into the nature of institutions and the functioning of museums—to his large “Décors,” which were installations assembled from fragments of his earlier works.
Broodthaers’ artistic career began when he was forty and working as a poet. Although brief, his practice suggested a new kind of relationship between text and image that erased borders between different media.
