The first Russian solo exhibition of Andro Wekua will be a site-specific project conceived for the Museum’s West Gallery.
Working across sculpture, painting, photography, drawing, bookmaking, and films, Wekua creates surreal landscapes from fragments of reminiscences, using aesthetic impressions and personal experiences. Having left Georgia in the midst of the civil war, the artist has been mining collective and personal memory to explore generational and private fears, creating scenes full of vague anticipation and environments that appear as stills from a film or a frozen cinematographic reality.
Andro Wekua (b. 1977, Sukhumi, Georgia). Solo exhibitions have been held at the Fridericianum (Kassel, 2011), Kunsthalle Wien (2011), Castello di Rivoli Museum of Contemporary Art (Turin, 2011), Benaki Museum (Athens, 2014), and Kölnischer Kunstverein (2016).
His works have been exhibited as part of major group shows, including 4th Berlin Biennale (Germany, 2006), the 8th Gwangju Biennale (South Korea, 2010), and 54th Venice Biennale (Italy, 2011) as well as in Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen (Rotterdam), San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Solomon R.
