Galleri Bon is proud to present Swiss artist Andrea Hasler’s first solo exhibition in Scandinavia. With Full-fat or semi-skinned? the artist presents a kind of luxurious breast machine that blurs the boundaries between inside and outside of the body. Combining plastic tubes, photography, studded breast implants, glitter and gold, the installation shows versions of a body design that necessitate a radical intrusion into the innermost parts of human kind. As possibilities of modelling and perfecting the body’s surface have become endless as well as financially affordable, the question arises how exclusiveness, decadence, wealth or the desire for an individually controlled and designed physicality can nonetheless be expressed. The observer is drawn into a chain of associations, ranging from sensations of shapeliness, softness, and attraction to repugnance and uncertainty, all the way to what breasts symbolize, namely the source of nutrition from one’s mother.
In her work, Andrea Hasler dissects social and emotional ideas of the body in relation to identification, beauty and pleasure. Her wax and mixed media sculptures are characterized by a tension between attraction and disgust and confront the observer with his or her own feelings of desire and repulsion, of power and control.
Andrea Hasler was born in 1975 in Zürich, Switzerland, and currently lives and works in London, UK. She holds a Master’s degree in Fine Art from Chelsea College of Art & Design. Her work has been exhibited widely internationally. Earlier this year, Andrea Hasler won the Greenham Common Commission, and she recently completed an Artist Residency at Verbier 3D Foundation, Switzerland as well as Chisenhale London, UK. Full fat or semi-skinned? is her first exhibition in Scandinavia.
