Southampton City Art Gallery houses an internationally-renowned fine art collection often described as one of the best outside London. Opening in 1939 the Gallery was founded by a bequest from Southampton Councillor Robert Chipperfield for the people of his adopted city. The nationally important collection, which continues to grow, comprises over 5,000 art works spanning eight centuries, tracing the history of European art from Renaissance to the present day. Housed in a stunning art deco building, the Gallery holds a regular programme of temporary exhibitions drawing upon its rich collection, and in collaboration with leading artists and arts institutions.
