Ekfrasi – yianna grammatopoulou, presents the solo exhibition of Annita Argiroiliopoulou entitled Mater faber.
In this new body of work, the artist chooses bold colors, in contrast to her earlier works, and creates compositions that combine painting and prints, while maintaining a three-dimensional feel and the blurring of the form. She depicts women surrendered to sleep, covered by a knitted blanket — a blanket knitted by her mother.
This is a personal and emotionally charged exhibition that pays tribute to mothers, the women who raised us. The element of knitting, which appears not only in the images but also in a sculptural composition dominating the space, is stripped of the craft and gendered dimensions often attributed to it. In her works, knitting functions as both a physical and mental process, a form of redemption, a process of self-awareness, and “a journey through time with invisible threads that bind, guide, and define the lives of people.”
As art historian Yannis Bolis notes, “With her new works, Annita comes to speak of security and protection, to depict her vital connection with the world, to refer to personal experiences and memories, to focus on her relationship with her mother and her daughter, to softly and comfortingly narrate small stories about all those simple things and situations that, in the end, might be the most essential, the most sincere.”
