Ludwig van Beethoven moved dozens of times during his 35 years in Vienna. The building at Mölker Bastei 8 was his most enduring place of residence. Here, he spent eight years of his life, albeit with interruptions, composing central works like the opera Fidelio. The rooms opposite Beethoven’s former apartment now feature a compact biographical exhibition about the world-famous musician.
The Mölker Bastei is a unique site. The block of houses is situated on top of the remains of Vienna's 16th century city fortifications. The old cobblestones, the proximity of Baroque and Biedermeier houses, and the building’s different heights have remained unchanged since Beethoven's time.
Beethoven's most famous piano piece, For Elise was completed here, as were the final versions of the 5th and 6th symphonies.
