No other composer was as deeply connected to Vienna as Franz Schubert. He spent his entire life in his native city and wrote immortal music, especially for his circle of friends. It all began with his birth in 1797 in this two-story townhouse on Himmelpfortgrund (in today's 9th district).

The building on Nußdorfer Strasse is one of the few surviving suburban houses from the time and was not only used for residential purposes, but also housed the school run by Franz Schubert's father.

Today, the building features an exhibition with documents, paintings, and audio samples recalling Schubert's biography, social circles, and musical achievements.

Those include — in addition to more than 600 songs — important symphonies, choral pieces, piano and chamber music. Also on display: the iconic glasses that gave the composer his signature look.
