The ancient land of Thrace, spanning parts of present-day Bulgaria, Romania, Greece, and Turkey, was home to a remarkable tribal culture renowned for its mastery of warfare, horsemanship, and artistry in precious metals.

Thracians created exquisite gold, silver, and bronze objects, often used in aristocratic activities such as banqueting and ceremonial displays. This exhibition presents a selection of artifacts unearthed from burial mounds and other archaeological sites, offering a glimpse into a culture that interacted with Greece, Persia, and Rome over nearly two millennia (circa 1700 BCE–300 CE).

While influenced by Greek art, the Thracians developed a distinctive style that reflects their unique identity. Organized in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Bulgaria, this exhibition is part of Getty’s program The classical world in context.
