The Pit is proud to present Ultraviolet catastrophe a two-person exhibition of new works by Chicago based artist Laura Berger and New York based artist Marina Kappos at The Pit Palm Springs. The exhibition will be on view starting December 3, 2024 with an opening reception on Saturday December 14 from 5-7pm.
The term Ultraviolet catastrophe refers to a classical physics error where high-frequency radiation was predicted to emit infinite energy into the ultraviolet spectrum. In reality, the universe doesn't allow for such infinities.
Both Berger and Kappos explore the female figure's intangible energy. Laura Berger's pieces depict female archetypes in serene, monochromatic settings. Her figures seem to be engulfed in a transcendental aura, expressed through nature in the anthropomorphic forms of light, air, and flora. Her works are an exploration of self-contemplation. Marina Kappos, on the other hand, translates figurative energy fields into dynamic, resonating paintings, suggesting alternative dimensions and realities. Each figure is repeated over itself creating new unintended images much like a Rorschach test. Her recurring motifs—faces, skulls, and hands—end up being abstracted through repetition, and the textured surfaces of her works evoke a visual hum, reminiscent of static.
