In spring 2022, the Staatsgalerie Stuttgart acquired a unique collection of photographs with over 200 original prints by the main representatives of New vision, new objectivity and Bauhaus from the Dietmar Siegert Collection. The Dietmar Siegert Collection is one of the most extensive and important private photo collections in Germany. For the first time, we are presenting a selection of around 150 of these works in The Gällery. Raum für Fotografie.

The 1920s and 30s are associated with great innovations in art and technology. After the First World War, numerous photographers searched for contemporary ways of depicting modernity, experimenting with double and multiple exposure as well as photograms, collages and montages. The selected works by Herbert Bayer, Aenne Biermann, Hugo Erfurth, Lotte Jacobi, Germaine Krull, László Moholy-Nagy, Walter Peterhans, Albert Renger-Patzsch and August Sander, among others, are not only related to each other in terms of form and content. They also create numerous art and photo-historical cross-references within the context of the Staatsgalerie's collection, for example to the works of Oskar Schlemmer or Willi Baumeister. The exhibition is divided into thematic chapters such as architecture, landscape, portrait, nude and object photography, which illustrate the artistic complexity of the medium and show how the New vision with its unusual perspectives and alienations has changed our perception.
