Valie Export (1940) is one of the most important artists of her generation. She is a pioneer of conceptual art, performance and film. Her work analyses feminist theories and questions social norms. It is characterised by contrariness and a belief in changing prevailing social relations through art.
Metanoia is a curated selection of 29 video works from 1966 to 2010. The eponymous ‘metanoia’ is a Greek word, which means spiritual and mental transformation. The collection comprises the artist’s seminal works and shows the wide range of her oeuvre, both in terms of media and subject matter.
The exhibition presents a selection of 10 films – purposefully arranged as a chronological cross-section. The works on display from 1966 to 2008 include experimental films, video-performances, video-poems, actions in public space and a recording of a performance from the 2007 Venice Biennale.
The set of videos entitled Metanoia by Valie Export was purchased by MOCAK and included into MOCAK Collection with government funding provided by the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage of the Republic of Poland.
