I will always remember the city of Kiel whenever it is mentioned in the news. The coastal city holds great memories for me, as I spent over three years there as a student at the University of Kiel. Kiel is a maritime hub in Germany, located near the famous port city of Hamburg. The city’s strategic port serves as a link between the Baltic and North Seas. Kiel is recognized as the first city in Germany to achieve zero-waste status due to its efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and implement a circular economy.
During the sailing event, the authorities in Kiel raise awareness about sustainability, focusing on curbing ocean pollution, promoting environmentally friendly practices through the use of renewable energy, and conserving the marine ecosystem. As a student in Kiel, I had the opportunity to experience Kiel Week three times, and it was always an amazing experience. In addition, cruise ships at the Port of Kiel were filled with tourists visiting the city for the annual event. Major shipping companies such as AIDA Nova, Costa Diadema, AIDA Luna, and MSC were present at the port during the summer, offering week-long cruises to various European destinations, including Italy, Spain, Sweden, Norway, and Denmark. There were also mini cruises, such as the two-day cruise from Kiel to Oslo, Norway, and Copenhagen, Denmark, offered by Color Line, and another mini cruise to Gothenburg, Sweden, operated by Stena Line.
