Jonathan Ross is pleased to announce the March exhibition at Gallery 286 where the very different nature of its two exhibition spaces will be perfectly complimented by its new occupants.

On the ground floor, where the red walls, heavy velvet drapes, antique furniture and welcoming gas-log fire evoke another era, Larisa Davatz is showing her elegant surreal paintings in which period costumes are central to the compositions. In some the owners of the dresses are only partly present, as if they cannot quite manifest themselves in the 21st century. Gone but not forgotten; insects, birds, butterflies and fish are their companions and other elements hint at a secret message only to be interpreted by the initiated.

Larisa Davatz was born in Tientsin, China. When she was 10 her family moved to the USSR. At the prestigious Moscow Art School and later at the Surikov Art Institute she proved to be a precocious talent. In her late twenties her travels took her to Tashkent, Uzbekistan where the culture and climate greatly influenced her artistic vision, providing a warm colour palette, romantic style and metaphorical content. Many of her works are in museum collections including the Tashkent and Samarkand Art Museums and the Tretiakov Art Gallery in Moscow.

In the downstairs gallery, contrastingly cool and white, Marco Sanges shows an exciting selection of surrealistic, erotic scenes and portraits of striking characters. Silent movies were a major inspiration for the epic pictures of this innovative photographer and filmmaker, and the influence of Surrealist painting and photography echoes in his still life compositions.
