Sugarlift is thrilled to announce Maja Dlugolecki: Love's Souvenir, on view from May 11 to June 17, 2023. The exhibition marks Dlugolecki's first solo show with the gallery.
Maja Dlugolecki, an LA-based artist, has created an entirely new body of work for her New York solo debut. Painted in a rented SoHo studio with floor-to-ceiling windows and charming hardwood floors, Dlugolecki's art captures the essence of the city, while also reflecting on her personal journey. At the time of this release, Dlugolecki continues to pour her heart and soul into each piece, creating an intimate and evocative collection that is both timely and representative of her artistic evolution.
Dlugolecki's process is intuitive, experimental, and innovative. She surrounds herself with paint swatches, allowing her to quickly respond to the creative process. Her art is not premeditated; rather, each painting is a personal exploration of emotion and experience, forming a visual diary for the artist. The result is a collection of deeply personal and authentic works that feel like polaroid snapshots of fleeting moments in time.
A self-taught artist, Dlugolecki began painting in 2016 as a means to process the emotions of a breakup. Since then, her artistic journey has been one of constant evolution, experimentation, and self-discovery. Her ability to express herself through her work is a testament to her raw talent and curiosity about the boundaries of self-expression on canvas. In 2022, Dlugolecki founded the artist collective Lobster Club, a community-oriented endeavor that features programming and pop-up exhibitions from LA to Tokyo. The collective aligns with Sugarlift’s mission to support artists and highlights Dlugolecki's passion for fostering creative connections within her community.
Maja Dlugolecki is a mixed-media painter based in Los Angeles. With a background in visual design, her work draws from experiences and impressions in her own life through an abstract lens. Maja’s intuitive paintings feature layered washes and a variety of textures, creating movement and emotion through bold pigments. With an ever evolving palette and method, maja enjoys experimenting and challenging new ways of expression through technique. each piece reflects a specific personal moment in time. In lieu of a daily journal, Maja assigns past recorded thoughts to her titles. She feels this process best reflects the emotional elusivity of a moment and how time to reflect provides a clearer understanding of the self.
