Working at the intersection between film and text and occasionally in drawing and painting, the work of Irineu Destourelles (Santo Antão, Cape Verde, 1974) focuses on issues of representation and language.

In this exhibition, the artist explores the perpetuation of colonial practices and their impact on both cognitive processes and the formation of social and power relations, placing central importance on the experience of discursive violence.

This project is also developed from his own condition as part of a diaspora and from his social experiences in the urban spaces of cities such as Lisbon, Mindelo and London.

Irineu Destourelles studied at the Willem de Kooning Akademie, Rotterdam, and at the Central St. Martin’s College of Art and Design, London. His work has been exhibited at Casa África, Las Palmas and the Fondazione Giorgio Cini, Venice, and projected at ICA, London, and Hangar Bicocca, Milan, among others. He currently lives and works between Edinburgh and London.
