This exhibition pays homage to El Víbora (The Viper) and its authors on the 40th anniversary since the publication of the first issue of this mythical comic book. It changed the lives of more than one generation in the 1980s and 90s.

The show centres on the magazine’s earliest stage, at the beginning of democracy, when Barcelona rose up as the hub of the underground culture that had exploded in the United States in the 1960s.

Via 35 original works, an extensive collection of documents and a selection of almost 100 covers, viewers will discover the creators’ originality and artistic power. The authors include Gallardo, Nazario, Mariscal, Martí, Max and Roger, whose groundbreaking vignettes in a whole new language expressed their rebellion against the established order and conventional aesthetics. The universe of El Víbora is populated by marginal and subversive figures.

The Museu Nacional has been working since 2014 to make comics part of our heritage and give them visibility. This artistic genre has entered the rooms of the Museum and is here to stay.
