In My Own Devices, Misha Vladimirskiy has captured celebrities interacting with themselves, creating visual doubles that both expose and obscure the subject’s true nature. Pairing technical acumen with instinct and intuition, Vladimirskiy’s images of actors, comedians, and musicians explore each subject’s self-awareness as well as their awareness of the viewer’s perceptions about the character they project. In showing these celebrities interacting with themselves, some self-consciously while others at ease, Vladimirskiy uses his camera to help his subjects and their alter egos reveal their stories.
Born in Transnistria, Misha Vladimirskiy received a BFA from the California College of Arts and Crafts (CCAC), where he studied with Larry Sultan and Jim Goldberg. Vladimirskiy has linked the worlds of commerce and art, launching two successful media companies. Vladimirskiy is equally comfortable working with international corporations as he is shooting live bands at intimate clubs and large-scale festivals. His commercial work has been featured in publications such as Billboard, Flaunt, The New York Times, NME, and Rolling Stone.
