Claus Georg Stabe has refined the genre of drawing. Using only the most basic tool, ballpoint pen on paper, he extends our understanding of the line – that most elementary part of the medium. Stabe draws his line across the surface of the paper and in doing so, creates unusual effects; they flicker, shimmer and shine in the eyes of the viewer, seducing their imagination.

Stabe achieves these effects by varying the pressure on the pen as he moves it across the paper, These subtle variations, in turn, produce denser and lighter lines, and then by layering different coloured inks, the resulting drawings take on their iridescently woven, linear quality. The horizontal lines visibly shift, distorting the abstract subjects, giving them an arcane quality.
