Having everything under control is, for many people, the only way to ensure peace of mind. This avoidance of surprises, this knowledge of behavioral sequences creates boredom, as much as guarantees stability and security. Unsure of what was achieved, feeling alone, although accompanied by numerous people; the individual creates rules, passwords to ensure the maintenance of his/her achievements. The experience of being threatened is a constant. This state of continuous anxiety makes one unable to sleep, prevents concentration, and transforms life into a series of events without unification, without organization. Everything is uncertain, nothing has meaning except this cloudiness, this organization fragmented and polarized by the accounting of losses or gains.
This process divides the individual, since he/she lives to achieve, to fulfill demands and to watch their complement. By doubling oneself (insofar as fragmented into an observer of his/her own achievements and failures), the emptying process sets in, for one must maintain the other. The division according to appearance and interests requires images kept at the expense of his/her own certainties, now transformed into uncertainties. It is an autophagic process. The being is sacrificed as a function of the process of having, of the act of looking like, and thus one loses contact with oneself, that is, with the possibility of relationship as an experience in the present. All that is experienced has a future purpose. Relational processes are transformed into configurations indicative of good or bad results.
To be dependent on the purpose, on the result, is asphyxiating, it creates confusion regarding what happens, it consists in the uncertainty that feeds anxiety, which disorganizes the day-to-day. Various stratagems are used to ensure certainty and drain anxiety: fears, compulsions, obsessive experiences as a way of ritualizing the imponderable, as the basis of some organization that generates peace, tranquility.
The continuity of the process of uncertainty paradoxically makes the individual to calm down insofar as he knows that he/she will die, that everything will end. Thus, anxiety finds a breakpoint, but in compensation it creates an experience of depression: the only certainty is the end.
The situations of uncertainty generate fantasies and justifications. Everything is invented as an attempt to create order, to create an organization that situates oneself and enables a way out. When this is done, maintenance reigns and, consequently, isolation increases. Increasingly alone, the individual collapses and his/her great companion becomes the remedy that relieves and appeases.
Experiencing uncertainty requires questioning. What has changed? What has been transformed? What has ceased to exist or changed its configuration? Answering these questions brings new insights, new realities, which, though not acceptable or comfortable, enable dialogue and transformation. Without questioning, changes are denied and, thus, cloudiness is created, responsible for the experience of uncertainties, of labyrinths to go through, sphinxes to decipher, movements to control, which, while motivating, make one occupied for some time, but then generate stress and boredom.
The monotony of existence - the devitalization - depresses.
