We are delighted to announce the first solo exhibition of the Italian master Piero Guccione. Under the curation on the British Art Historian and Critic Michael Peppiatt, the exhibition will be inaugurated on July 4. There will be some 20 works tracing the artistic journey of Piero Guccione, from the historic graphics of the 60s to his latest pastels.
“For the last half-century Piero Guccione has been a legend in Italy, prominently exhibited and lavishly praised by the country’s leading writers but rarely heard (he resolutely avoids interviews) and almost never publicly seen. Cut off from the world in a silent studio in distant southern Sicily, Guccione spends months, sometimes years, on a single image, obsessively reworking the precise subtleties of its tones until he feels it has captured the essence of the arid hills and glittering Mediterranean that make up the boundaries of his chosen world. Only then will he allow it to join the works patiently assembled for one of his exhibitions in Rome, Paris, New York – and now, at last, London”.
“Periodically, to escape the long-term labour that each new oil painting imposes, Guccione concentrates on pastel. The change of medium frees him and, since he masters it so naturally, allows him to catch a more instantaneous side of the reality – the infinitely changing face of nature – that obsesses him. Thus he can move freely from the obsessive theme of sea and sky to catching swallows in their mad summer flight or the fixed brilliance of stars at night. Even Guccione’s car, faithful companion on his restless search for new and unexpected subjects, is celebrated in these spontaneous studies, off-setting the Friedrich-like romanticism of the scene with its brute metallic solidity“.
