Magí Puig’s paintings find inspiration in his travels and scenes of daily life. His themes represent pieces from different landscapes, e.g. Senegal, Vietnam, or cities such as Venice and Havana. He also depicts figures on the beach, in the market, circus performers and others.

Each painting has a principal element, which the artist has worked intensively and meticulously. They stand out against the flat, uniform surface that represents the sky, the ground or water. He often uses close-ups in order to obtain vivid images of the people and objects represented. Then, the buildings, items or persons depicted in dark colours emerge dramatically from brighter backgrounds, acquiring volume and sculptural appearance. Other times he arranges the scene with high and low angles (as if he was looking at it from either above or below) creating unusual, vertiginous, eye-catching perspectives.

He utilises powerful colours to convey the essence of reality, going beyond the appearance. Intense luminosity is almost a constant feature in his creations. He approaches it into the bright glaring light, playing with its distorting influence on colour and creating backgrounds that combine both dense and translucent effects. Frequently, light and water merge into a bright and impenetrable atmosphere, like a shimmering haze. On other occasions, the light effects are set in the foreground and convey a feeling of distance and mystery to the painting.

The people he portrays are mostly women isolated in solitude, idealized, bathed in intense Mediterranean light. Recently he has introduced his children into his repertoire; they are represented in the intimacy of the family life, sleeping, jumping or playing on the tablet. The artist has the ability to capture moments and characteristic movements by “freezing” them in time, and turning them into special, almost spiritual moments.

Magí Puig, well-regarded by many collectors, has been exhibiting at Sala Parés, Barcelona, since 2003. He has displayed in other prestigious galleries and art fairs in Madrid, London, Paris, Geneva, New York, Toronto and Montpellier.
