This exhibition celebrates the 100th anniversary of the birth of De Stijl, a magazine which gave the name to the artistic movement. Among the founders Theo van Doesburg and Piet Mondrian, the expressions of the two souls of De Stijl: architect the first, painter the second.
Our aim is to investigate which elements between the leading principles and the artworks have been assimilated into the language of contemporary artists. Of course, we have no claim to replace those museums and institutions that in the Netherlands and around the world have presented, through curatorial and scientific research, the legacy of the movement. Our intent was rather to work without departing from the philosophy that the gallery has always pursued since its foundation: dealing with the relationship between East and West, deepening the themes of nature and space. So it was that we felt that by presenting the dialogue between the installations of artist and designer Giovanna Strada, and the sculptures of Israeli ceramist Simcha Even-Chen were the best way to celebrate Mondrian’s teaching.
The concept of equilibrium, from which the title of the exhibition, we believe can best synthesize our perceptual path between the real and the ideal that the spectator is invited to pass through the latent spaces of Giovanna Strada and the balanced volumes of Simcha Even-Chen , without ever forgetting the abstract compositions of Mondrian.
