With her original approach to making “video based on painting” Yuriko Sasaoka explores the interface between painting and video, by creating works that suggest “touches” similar to brushstrokes. Her technique combines filmed bodily elements such as faces and hands, into low-tech videos of puppet shows with Stage Assistants dressed in black and are reminiscent of SFX. Featuring noise that high-tech computer graphics do not have she invites the viewer to experience complex structures and stories in a unique world that is paradoxically nostalgic yet never seen before.

This exhibition features a video installation that interprets and visualizes the Bible, which Sasaoka began reading after the death of her dog. The exhibition title “command X” refers both to The Ten Commandments and the Mac’s shortcut keys for cutting (command + X). Composed with an original language “Hororu”, created to evoke the artist’s sense of being interconnected within a Japanese cultural context that often has less overt religious beliefs, a stage space where real and unreal emerge into each other as a new space unfolds.

Speaking on Sasaoka’s Art the critic Roxane Bovet remarked about her recent Genève Artist in Residence work (Switzerland, 2016): Multiple - it’s the word that describes the artist’s work, as her work refers to many areas. Because of this, her work has potentiality of dealing with everything on earth, evokes imagination, and abandons conventional cultural, social, and physical boundaries.

Signs are mixed as symbolic motifs are layered, and fictional stories appear as more complex, rich, and critical images.

Yuriko Sasaoka was born in 1988 in Osaka. After graduating from the Painting Course at the Faculty of Fine Art, Kyoto City University of Arts in 2012, she studied at Media Art, Graduate School of Arts-Doctoral Course, Kyoto City University of Arts. She currently lives and works in Osaka. She was selected for the Jury Selections in the "18th Japan Media Arts Festival" (2014), and received the Akira Tatehata Prize at "Art Award Tokyo Marunouchi 2014" in the same year and the Special Award at Taro Okamoto Award for Contemporary Art (2016). Sasaoka recently presented work in "Setouchi Triennale 2016" (Shodoshima-Island, Kagawa) and exhibited work at the "Gunma Biennale for Young Artists 2017", in addi tion to her solo exhibition "Hello Holy!" at @KCUA (Kyoto, July 2017).
