Patrick Parrish Gallery is pleased to present "Feelers", a solo exhibition of new hand-carved wooden sculptures by Oakland artist Julian Watts. The collection consists of sculptural vessels and tools alongside large, abstract forms, all relying on traditional carving techniques to reveal an unexpectedly human vulnerability in the wood.
Each piece draws inward or extends out, negotiating the space between body, object, functionality, biology, landscape, and design. The tensions between these qualities activate an intimacy and sensitivity within these inanimate objects, and enables them to feel out novel ways of relating to each other and the world beyond.
Julian Watts is an artist and woodworker based in Oakland, California. His background in contemporary sculpture and installation, as well as traditional furniture making, influence his unique approach to woodcarving.
