The Randall’s Island Park Alliance and the Bronx Museum of the Arts are pleased to present FLOW, an annual summer art exhibition located on Randall’s Island in New York City. FLOW is aimed at fostering appreciation of the history and ecology of the island through artistic expression. FLOW.17 will feature the Island of Empirical Data and Other Fabrications a series of site-specific installations conceived by Rose DeSiano, an alumna of the Bronx Museum's Artist in the Marketplace (AIM) program for emerging artists.

This interactive art piece uses historical records, statistical data, photo archives, and government documents to explore the complexity and reflexivity of culturally-constructed histories. At the touchdowns of crossings from East Harlem and the South Bronx, oversized, colorful, reflective panels, covered with photographs of buildings, sites and landmarks, draw attention to the Island’s history as microcosm of urban planning and cultural transformation. The panels loom over park visitors, extending the periphery and enveloping them within past challenges and triumphs. At the same time, their own images are reflected and superimposed upon the scene, in turn updating the archival images within modern-day Randall’s Island Park.

Location: Island of Empirical Data and Other Fabrications can be found at the touchdown of the 103rd Street Footbridge from Manhattan and the touchdown of the Randall’s Island Connector from the Bronx. Randall’s Island Park is a unique and remarkable waterfront resource, located in the East River with views of the Queens, Bronx, and Manhattan shorelines. Waterfront pathways run along the 4.5-mile shoreline, which includes 20 acres of natural areas, restored salt marsh and freshwater wetlands. The Park also offers a track & field stadium, a golf center, a tennis center, an urban farm and dozens of new playing fields.
