“What strange phenomena we find in a great city, all we need do is stroll about with our eyes open. Life swarms with innocent monsters” - Charles Beaudelaire
Our latest show titled People, Places, Purpose opens on Saturday 5th September and continues until the 4th November 2015. Our urban themed show kicks off with a real punch with six artists meticulously chosen for the show.
Our new show welcomes two brand new and highly talented artists. First up is Natalie Rymer; Natalie works with acrylic in her compositions and delights in painting distinctive landscapes. She depicts the tranquillity and beauty of the English countryside through her use of block colours, patterns and shapes. Her imaginative eye for colour leads her to use a warm, rich palette, and she uses numerous painting techniques to develop a variety of surface texture.
Andrew Hood our very own modern day Lowry is our oil painter for the show; inspired by his travels around Marrakech, India and South East Asia. Vibrant colours are portrayed with sunset oranges, terracotta reds and mustard yellows. Andrew portrays scenes from a birds eye view depicting crowds of people submerged within the tall impressive buildings and city streets. The flicking of his paintbrush within his works creates these wonderful drips of paint that add depth. As well as the iconic layering of paint, this creates the rich full texture within the composition of Andrew’s works.
Margaret Knott is one of our longest standing and most talented artists. She is also a local to us and well known within the Putney community. Through an assortment of various different mediums: watercolour, etching, gouache and graphite, acrylic and oil she captures wonderful elements in and around Putney and afar with her own distinct stamp of style. Putney Bridge, one of Margaret’s more popular subject matter to depict, is created in fragmentation portrayed with an array of different colours. Another favourite focus for Margaret is the sailing boats along the Thames that are just magical.
Michael Wallner is our second new artist for this show. Michael’s work is printed on aluminium sheets, which exudes a smart, cool and fresh idea that further contributes to the cityscape theme. Michael captures well known bridges and buildings that make us fall in love with London all over again in a city that we can be proud to call our own.
Clare Halifax captures strikingly intricate city scenes around London on grid like paper that marks her distinctive style. The overall impression is slick, painstakingly detailed and accurate to real life views with a freshness of colour and ingenious design piped into the making.
Last but definitely not least is our screen print artist Martin Grover. Martin’s work incorporates the stereotypical London buses but provides classic humour with the proud ownership feel over London boroughs. He works across the whole spectrum of North, East, South or West London and wickedly injects a giggle within his own version of the Lord’s prayer.
