THE PLAYERS Championship at TPC Sawgrass

Since its start in 1974, with Jack Nicklaus’ historic victory over J.C. Snead at Atlanta Country Club, THE PLAYERS Championship has been one of the PGA TOUR’s most coveted titles.

Now held annually in May, THE PLAYERS Championship remains one of the most anticipated tournaments on the PGA TOUR calendar, boasting not only the strongest field but also the biggest purse on the PGA TOUR. From Jerry Pate's tossing Pete Dye into the lake at hole 18 to Tiger's 2001 Better Than Most putt heard around the world, the event continues to set the stage for TOUR drama at its finest.

The TPC at Sawgrass is situated in Ponte Vedra Beach's Sawgrass development. It has two individual courses, the Stadium Course and the Valley Course. The Stadium Course was designed in 1980 by noted golf course architects Pete and Alice Dye, and is known as one of the most difficult golf courses in the world. Constructed specifically to host The Players Championship, it employs a distinctive "stadium" concept: like in other sports, fans at the TPC sit in "stands" made of raised mounds of grass. It is known for its signature hole, the par-3, 132-yard 17th, known simply as the "Island Green", one of golf's most recognizable and difficult holes. The course has been featured for many years on the best-selling Tiger Woods PGA Tour golf game series.
