Copenhagen is one of the world’s top ten most expensive cities in the world. I can understand when visitors are frustrated with the fact that the average price of a beer in a bar is 40 dkk (which is equivalent of 5 euros) and wonder how to arrange budget vacation in Copenhagen. Still it is possible to find a lot of free things in this quite expensive city!

Being a couchsurfer and poor au pair myself, I have always searched for the free or cheap attractions in whatever city I was staying. This is my list of top 5 free things to do in Copenhagen:

1. Free walking tour

If you like exploring the city with a nice, witty and funny guide, come to the City Hall Square any day at 11 am and join a free excursion. Of course, tips are always appreciated and every little bit helps. As free walking tours are run by volunteers, quality of content is better than in conventional excursions because the guides try very hard and do their best to gain your gratitude.

2. Festivals like World Music festival, Strom Festival of electronic music, Gay Pride Parade are all free!

It just requires some time to find all those events (best sources are Facebook and visitcopenhagen.com). You can volunteer at some cool and expensive event and that way you can get free admission. For example I volunteered on Trailer Park Festival, huge collaboration of artists, musical bands and DJs. After I had worked for 4 hours on the first day of the festival, on the second I came there just to party (of course without paying the entrance fees). Fashion week opened doors to one of its fancy parties where at the entrance you got even free beer.

3. Get awesome panoramic view from the top of the palace of Danish Parliament.

Yes, you can and definitely should climb up to the top of the Christiansborg Palace Tower and make thousands of selfies with Copenhagen in the background.

4. Are you interested in art or history?

Come on! Everybody can find something extraordinary and exciting in the National Gallery of Denmark and The National Museum. In the video below you can see short overview of the museum (just after Gay Pride Parade).

5. Check out Couchsurfing and Meetup

If you are a one-day visitor or you arrived to spend some time in Copenhagen, please make sure that you have checked couchsurfing and meetup societies Those two networks present awesome opportunities for everyone, and who knows, maybe you will be lucky enough to get on the guest-list of the best party or find a buddy to hang out with during the day. Those communities attract only open-minded people and feel free to contact any of them.
