The Várfok Gallery was founded by Károly Szalóky -who remains owner to this day- immediately after the introduction of Democracy to Hungary in 1990, under the name Várfok 14 Műhelygaléria (work-shop gallery). It is one of the first private contemporary art galleries in Hungary. Once a coal cellar, it was transformed into an exhibition hall (later called Várfok Hall) in Várfok St. 14.
