Mary Layoun es Profesora Emérita de Literatura Comparada en la Universidad de Wisconsin, Madison, donde trabajó de 1985 a 2019. Se licenció en Literatura en la Universidad de California en San Diego (1973) y obtuvo un máster (1979) y un doctorado (1985) en Literatura Comparada por la Universidad de California en Berkeley.

Su trabajo se centra en las intersecciones entre política, historia, cultura y literatura; el nacionalismo; la narrativa; la cultura visual; la traducción; los cómics; la construcción de comunidades, la solidaridad y los movimientos sociales; la historia del campo y la disciplina de la literatura comparada.

Da charlas y conferencias públicas y participa en debates comunitarios sobre estos y otros temas, como Israel/Palestina, Líbano, Grecia, la Unión Europea y el demos, Oriente Medio y el colonialismo, el transnacionalismo y lo comparativo, la nueva extrema derecha, la seguridad global y la guerra de Estados Unidos contra el terrorismo, el colonialismo y lo poscolonial. Formó parte del Comité Directivo del Centro Haven para el Estudio de las Estructuras Sociales y el Cambio Social (1990-2019) en el Departamento de Sociología de la U.W. Madison. Además, organizó y dirigió viajes de historia de los derechos civiles en Estados Unidos y viajes internacionales de justicia social a Chipre.
