Gülnaz Can is a communications specialist, a freelance journalist and art writer.
Gülnaz worked as a news presenter in Turkey and has 12 years of news broadcasting experience in different capacities. She started working in news television at the age of 17 and was promoted to morning show producer at CNN Turk at the age of 21. Gülnaz put her TV profession on hold, when in 2012 she was awarded with a Chevening Scholarship from the UK government in Journalism and Media Studies, and moved to London.
She holds a BA in Management of Performing Arts from Istanbul Bilgi University and an MA in Sociology; Gender, Media and Culture from Goldsmiths, University of London. She is currently at the dissertation stage of an MA in Women’s Studies at Istanbul University. Her area of interest has mainly been focused around feminism, gender theories and the arts. Her art reviews and interviews have been published in The Guardian, This is Tomorrow, The Protagonist Magazine, Aesthetica and Ambit Magazine in the UK, and Radikal, Agos, Express and Pulbiber in Turkey.
Having a track record of feminist activism in Turkey, lately, Gülnaz has also focused on development and young women’s empowerment in the media through her work with international charities Open Society Foundations and GlobalGirl Media UK. Gülnaz is a currently the chair of trustees at GlobalGirl Media UK and is a trainer at GlobalGirl Media Academy. Residing in Peckham, South London, Gülnaz also has been volunteering for Peckham Platform since 2017, a non-profit gallery dedicated to social art.
