Marcu-Andrei Solomon is a geopolitical analyst specialized in Russian and post-Soviet affairs. He was born and raised in Bucharest, Romania, studied in The Hague, The Netherlands, and is now residing in Brussels, Belgium.
Mr. Solomon’s most recent position is that of Event and Outreach Manager at Free Russia Foundation Brussels, a US-supported NGO dedicated to aiding and advocating for the causes of the Russian democratic opposition. He has experience in interacting with high-level stakeholders from the “Brussels Bubble” and beyond, as well as in drafting outreach strategies to relevant institutions, such as the EU and NATO. He is a firm believer in the primacy of democratic values and underlines the imperative importance of supporting pro-democracy movements on a global scale in their struggle against authoritarianism.
Before moving to project management and advocacy-related endeavors, he focused significantly on geopolitical writing and research. He was part of the European Parliament’s Schuman program, working in the Russia and Eastern Partnership Unit of the Directorate-General for External Policies of the Union. There, he would draft analyses on the developments in Russia and Moldova in particular, while also supporting the organization of European Parliament events, such as the Euronest Parliamentary Assembly.
Before starting his Brussels endeavors, Mr. Solomon was an external affairs specialist and research department coordinator at New Strategy Center, a prestigious Romanian think tank specialized in the security of the Black Sea, the Balkans, and Eastern Europe. This is where he started sharpening his writing on geopolitical topics, being able to both write his own studies and analyses and to edit the work of his peers.
Marcu Solomon has published studies, briefs, and analyses on topics such as Russia’s hybrid warfare in the Republic of Moldova, the effect of Western sanctions against Russia, or the geostrategic importance of microchips. He has been published in the Parisian journal “L’Europe Unie” and has held briefs and presentations for the European Parliament.
Among his other policy interests are energy policy, the geopolitical importance of raw materials and rare earth minerals, disinformation, and the evolution of hybrid warfare.
Mr. Solomon holds a BA in International Studies and an MA in Russian and Eurasian Studies from Leiden University, The Netherlands. During the early years of his career, he interned at various organizations and NGOs, such as Freedom House Romania, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, and the Embassy of Romania in the Kingdom of the Netherlands.
He speaks Romanian natively, English fluently, Russian at an advanced level, and French at an intermediate level.
Outside of geopolitics, Mr. Solomon has a passion for classic Hollywood films, chess, Cold War history, and various sports, such as football and rugby.
He has often been described as an idealist whose work forces him to be a realist. He hopes he can offer Meer’s readers a bit of both in his pieces.
