My name is Kieran Farrugia, I am 25 years old, and I come from the vibrant and historically rich European microstate of Malta. Malta, while small in size, is a country with a complex and dynamic culture, deeply influenced by its unique position at the crossroads of Europe and the Mediterranean. Growing up in this environment, I developed a deep appreciation for the cultural and political landscape that has shaped my homeland. This appreciation naturally led me to pursue a career in journalism, where I could explore these interests more deeply and share them with others.

I earned my Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Journalism from the Malta College of Arts, Science, and Technology. My time at university shaped my journalistic skills, providing me with a solid foundation in reporting, writing, and critical analysis. The rigorous curriculum introduced me to the various facets of journalism, from news reporting to feature writing and everything in between. It also instilled in me the importance of ethics in journalism—a principle that I have carried with me throughout my career. However, while my academic training was valuable, I believe that the real test of a journalist comes when they step into the field, and it is here where I truly found my footing.

After completing my degree, I embarked on my professional journey with one of Malta's leading newspapers, The Malta Independent. This role was my introduction to the fast-paced world of journalism, where every day brought new challenges and opportunities. During my time at The Malta Independent, I was tasked with covering a broad spectrum of local and current affairs, which allowed me to gain a deeper understanding of the issues facing my country. Whether it was reporting on a major political development or covering a community event, I learnt the importance of staying informed and being adaptable.

One of the highlights of my time at The Malta Independent was the opportunity to interview some of Malta’s top politicians. These interviews were not only a chance to engage with the key figures shaping our nation's future but also an exercise in balancing thorough questioning with respectful dialogue. Through these interactions, I gained invaluable insight into the political processes that govern Malta and developed a deeper appreciation for the complexities of leadership and governance.

In addition to political figures, I also had the opportunity to interview some of the country’s leading academics. These interviews were particularly rewarding because they allowed me to delve into topics that require more in-depth analysis and understanding. Engaging with experts on various subjects, from economics to social policy, helped me expand my knowledge and provided a platform to bring important academic discussions into the public domain.

While my professional experience at The Malta Independent was pivotal in shaping my career, it was not my first foray into the world of writing. Before joining the newspaper, I engaged in voluntary freelance writing, which provided a different but equally valuable perspective on journalism. One of the most notable experiences from this period was my work with The European Intelligencer, a publication that, although no longer in existence, played a significant role in European discourse during its time. Writing for The European Intelligencer allowed me to explore topics beyond Malta, giving me a broader understanding of European affairs and international affairs and the interconnectedness of our world. It was an experience that not only sharpened my writing skills but also reinforced my passion for journalism.

Throughout my short career, I have found that my primary interests lie in three key areas: culture, politics, and sports. Culture, in its many forms, fascinates me because of its power to both shape and reflect society. Whether it’s through art, literature, or everyday traditions, culture is a lens through which we can understand ourselves and others. Politics, on the other hand, interests me because of its direct impact on our lives. The decisions made by our leaders, the policies they enact, and the systems they uphold all play a crucial role in shaping our world. Reporting on politics has given me a deeper appreciation for the complexities of governance and the importance of informed, responsible journalism.

Sports, meanwhile, have always been a personal passion of mine. I am captivated by the way sports can inspire, challenge, and unite people. Whether it’s the excitement of a major international tournament or the dedication of an individual athlete, sports stories are filled with drama, emotion, and universal appeal. Covering sports allows me to explore these narratives and share them with others, highlighting not just the achievements of athletes but also the broader cultural and social significance of sports.
