This July Waterhouse & Dodd will present a selection of recent paintings by two of our represented artists, Alex Rennie and Karen Gunderson. Alex will be well known to visitors of our London galleries having had a solo exhibition in October 2012 and shown regularly in mixed exhibitions and art fairs since. Karen is more closely associated with our New York gallery where she has also had a solo exhibition. Both artists have been hung together before, most recently at the Pulse New York art fair and at the Art Miami fair.

Karen's seascapes and mountain views are traditional enough in subject matter, but the way the image is constructed is very unusual. Using only one colour - either black or white - Karen uses the reflective quality of varnished paint to create her images. Light is reflected off the raised brush marks and the image shifts and shimmers as you move around the painting and the angle of the light changes. Her work is both technically dazzling and ethereal.

Alex's paintings are inspired by more urban themes. His use of construction timbers as a metaphor for growth and regeneration is both inventive and beautifully simple. He turns what could be a prosaic subject into something more poetic, often incorporating trompe l'oeil graffiti to add a human presence and a sense of relationships forming over the years. His work is based on London, and the affect of major events in the city's history such as the Second World War are rendered in a understated yet profound way.

Although these two artists are not linked in any clearly defined stylist or thematic way, both have used a traditional medium (oil painting) and traditional subject matter (landscape and the built environment) to create startling images of great originality. Both are unified by their use of a limited palate and refined compositions despite both creating rather complex final images.

All works in the exhibition are for sale, prices range from £1,500 to £15,000 and all images can be viewed online at www.waterhousedodd.com/exhibitions/gunderson-rennie.
