From April 5th to September 14th, 2025, the Design Museum Brussels presents the touring exhibition Skateboard, from the Design Museum in London. The exhibition explores the development of skateboard design over seven decades, focusing on the technological, performative and aesthetic evolution of the skateboard.
Since the 1950s, skateboarding has evolved from a passing children’s hobby into one of the most popular, accessible, and spectacular sports in the world. The exhibition, curated and designed by industrial designer and skater Jonathan Olivares, charts this evolution through an extensive collection of decks, trucks and wheels. Visitors will gain insight into how skaters have repeatedly re-designed their boards to new styles and environments.
The exhibit includes about 100 unique skateboards, in addition to more than 150 other items such as wheels, trucks, safety equipment, VHS tapes and magazines. Nearly half of the skateboards on display are on loan from the Skateboarding Hall of Fame Museum in California. Some of the special pieces include some of the early 1950’s homemade skateboards from California, the first kicktail skateboard models, Sky Brown’s first pro model, Palace’s “Long Live Southbank” deck, and so on.
