In India, 60% of the population has pets. That is incredibly high. For times when these families decide to travel, the impossible task of caring for their pets from afar begins.

Pet parents constantly struggle with the guilt of leaving their pets behind when they travel. However, with relaxed pet travel rules throughout India, this concern is no longer as stressful. The two main modes of public transport that can be used when taking a trip with your furry companion are trains and planes. Pet boarding or other alternatives often do not seem fair to dedicated pet parents. The best option? Traveling with your pet.

The Indian railways: a pet-friendly option

Indian Railways offers special provisions that allow pet parents to travel with their furry friends. Pets are permitted in AC First Class cabins (four berths) or coupes (two berths). The pet must stay next to the owner at all times. For those traveling in any other class, pets must be kept in a secure box in the luggage van. Understandably, most people opt for the first option to keep their pets close. In both cases, feeding and care remain the sole responsibility of the pet owner.

When booking train tickets, pets are registered under the Passenger Name Record (PNR). The pet must be taken to the luggage office at least three hours before departure for official registration. This procedure applies whether the ticket is booked through a Passenger Reservation System (PRS) counter or online via IRCTC. Dogs are not allowed in AC 2-tier, AC 3-tier, AC Chair Car, Sleeper Class, or Second-Class Compartments. If other passengers object to the pet’s presence, the animal will be moved to the Guard van, and no refund will be issued for the prescribed charges paid.

A heavy penalty is imposed on those carrying dogs without prior booking. Additionally, a veterinarian’s certificate specifying the breed, color, gender, and overall health of the pet must be provided at the time of registration.

Special rules for small dogs

A travel basket is recommended for those traveling with smaller dogs or puppies. A confirmed train ticket, valid ID proof, and a veterinarian’s certificate are required. Standard luggage charges also apply.

Traveling in the brake van

A dedicated dog-box is available in the luggage-cum-Brake Van, supervised by the Train Manager (Guard). The owner must present a confirmed ticket and valid ID proof. The pet must be brought to the luggage office three hours before the train's departure. Upon arrival at the final destination, the owner must submit the Guard’s receipt to retrieve the pet. As with all rail travel, feeding and care remain the owner's responsibility.

The liability of Indian railways

Indian Railways explicitly states that they are not responsible for the loss, destruction, damage, deterioration, or non-delivery of animals after transit. Pet owners must take full responsibility for their animals throughout the journey.

Airlines that allow pet travel

When traveling with pets on flights, it is crucial to have the correct documentation. A valid health certificate is mandatory for domestic travel. Several Indian airlines accommodate pet travel based on specific regulations:

Air India: The only airline in India that allows pets to travel in the passenger cabin. For an additional charge, dogs, cats, and birds can be carried either in the cabin (if under five kilograms) or in the cargo hold. Pets must be at least eight weeks old to be eligible for travel.

Jet Airways: While not currently operational, it previously allowed birds and rabbits on domestic flights in cargo.

IndiGo: IndiGo permits only guide/service dogs for visually impaired passengers. Regular pet travel is not allowed on their flights.

Pet-friendly hotels across India

More than 500 pet-friendly hotels, resorts, and homestays exist in India. Each accommodation has different pet policies, so checking in advance is advisable. While many properties welcome pets, additional charges for accommodation, food, and extra amenities may apply. Some luxury hotels even offer pet beds, food bowls, and special pet menus to ensure a comfortable stay for furry companions.
