Control Gallery is pleased to announce the very first Los Angeles solo exhibition from Jasmine Monsegue, Everything that glitters.
Everything that glitters draws from Monsegue’s upbringing within the Afro-Caribbean, Latinx & African American culture deeply embedded in the Southern United States, to explore themes of spirituality and identity. The surreal imagery and experimental applications of airbrush Monsegue is known for, permeates though this body of work, as she expands her practice beyond a wall-mounted canvas to surfaces that further her narratives.
With this body of work Monsegue hopes to present a contemporary history of southern African-Americans with softness, taking this opportunity to elevate subcultures within the region with allusions to memory, seduction and delicacy. Working with unconventional objects, such as synthetic hair and recycled furniture pieces, the artist highlights the versatility of her medium and resourcefulness embedded in human nature. The soft-glow quality of airbrush embeds subjects such as pop stars and strippers within otherworldly environments that reference Black spiritual life, sexuality, and femininity.
Monsegue’s painting, entitled The pony, depicts an industry-known strip club in a desolate area of Memphis, Tennessee. The piece is haunting but enchanting; the push-and-pull between soft blur and clearly rendered, and the brightly colored building against the dark and isolate setting, pushes the viewer to feel the tension that exists in sex work. The exhibition continues with these themes through large-scale pieces, emphasizing strong female figures within evocative spaces, where there is freedom to express vanity, promiscuity and a divine power.
The opening reception for Everything that glitters will take place on February 15, 2025, from 6pm to 9pm, with the exhibition running through March 29, 2025.
