During his lifetime, Joseph Haydn was the world’s most famous composer. He developed this reputation through decades of service for the aristocratic Esterházy family. When he retired, he embarked on two triumphant concert tours in England, enabling him to purchase a stately town house in Gumpendorf (today’s 6th district). Thanks to careful renovation, Haydn's last residence can be experienced in its original condition.
Here, Haydn composed important works such as the oratorios The creation and The seasons. The exhibition tells us more about this along with the many visitors who came here to pay their respects to Haydn.
The house’s wonderful garden — a green oasis in the middle of a densely built area (not far from the hustle and bustle of Mariahilfer Straße) — was historically reconstructed and is open to visitors.
