The inconspicuous house at Tuchlauben 19 possesses a historical sensation: a dance hall from the early 15th century featuring the oldest secular wall paintings in Vienna. Miraculously, they survived over the centuries and can be admired in the context of an exhibition about Viennese life during the Middle Ages.

The paintings depict tales of the composer Neidhart, an all-around star of the Middle Ages.

His works celebrated love and pleasure, but also addressed the often-tense relationships between social classes.

Commissioned by the wealthy merchant Michel Menschein, the paintings offer exciting insights into everyday life in the medieval city. The scenes illustrate music and dance as well as fashion and food. The restoration of the murals and the history of the house itself are also explained in the Neidhart Festsaal.
