In the bustling heart of Brighton, Enter Gallery prepares to unveil Dan Baldwin x Enter Gallery: 20 Years, a highly anticipated exhibition by renowned contemporary artist Dan Baldwin. On December 5th, the gallery will celebrate not only Baldwin's remarkable artistry but also his enduring 20-year partnership with gallery owner Lawrence Alkin. Their collaboration has shaped both Baldwin’s career and the cultural landscape of Brighton’s art scene.
Reflecting on their journey during a live podcast recording, Baldwin and Alkin revisited the serendipitous origins of their relationship. Baldwin, a young artist fresh out of the Kent Institute of Art & Design in the mid-1990s, had struggled to find venues to showcase his work. Brighton's art scene then was sparse. Lawrence Alkin recognised Baldwin’s talent after stumbling upon his pop-up display in Brighton. Soon after, Baldwin approached Alkin's gallery, setting the stage for what would become a transformative collaboration.
"I was nervous taking my prints into the gallery,” Baldwin shared. "But Lawrence’s enthusiasm and support turned that fear of rejection into an opportunity."
This pivotal moment became the foundation for Baldwin’s artistic journey, which he describes as deeply intertwined with Enter Gallery's ethos. "Lawrence has always been there as a steady supporter of my works," Baldwin remarked, reflecting on their shared growth over two decades.
At the time, printmaking was becoming a pivotal medium for Baldwin. Encouraged by collaborators, Baldwin began incorporating print editions alongside his original paintings. His intricate works, blending themes of innocence, mortality, and nature, captivated audiences and became a cornerstone of the gallery’s offerings. Baldwin reminisced about their early days, including experimental creations that featured unconventional elements like razor blades, dollar bills, and hand grenades, symbols that played with the innocence and danger present in his paintings.
The upcoming exhibition will highlight Baldwin’s evolution as an artist, including 10 unique original artworks combining hand-painted backgrounds with black-outlined compositions, a hallmark of his style. Additionally, three new colourways of his limited-edition print, The Road Less Travelled, will debut at the show.
Alkin also recalled how these bold prints resonated with collectors, even during the evolving stages of the print boom. “There was an energy in the art world in 2004, and Baldwin’s work was right at the heart of it,” Alkin noted. His gallery, a pioneer in Brighton's evolving art scene, offered the perfect platform for Baldwin's work to flourish.
Over the years, Baldwin and Alkin's relationship has grown beyond artist and gallery owner into a mutual respect founded on trust and shared values. Baldwin attributes much of his sustained success to Alkin's unwavering commitment to artists, praising the gallery's consistency and professional support. For Alkin, Baldwin’s signature colour palette and fragmented compositions—psychological landscapes filled with symbols of life, death, and nature—are what make his work timeless. Alkin shares, “Even in his darker subjects, the balance of colour and composition always shines through.”
As Baldwin reflects on his two-decade journey with Enter Gallery, he acknowledges the challenges of the ever-changing art world and the importance of adapting to new modes of working. Despite these hurdles, his partnership with Alkin remains steadfast—a beacon of collaboration in an increasingly commercialised industry.
"This exhibition is not only a milestone in my career but also a chance to showcase the narrative that has defined my art: contrasts of life and death, beauty and threat," Baldwin explained. "Each piece reflects my commitment to exploring these themes through colour and composition."
The exhibition at Enter Gallery is a testament to the enduring power of creative relationships and the vibrancy of independent art spaces. In Baldwin’s words, "It’s been a fantastic 20 years, and I couldn’t imagine a better foundation for my work."
Baldwin's exhibition, Dan Baldwin x Enter Gallery: 20 Years, encapsulates his artistic evolution while remaining rooted in themes that have defined his career. It is not just a celebration of artistic ingenuity but also a tribute to a partnership that has helped shape the trajectory of contemporary art in Brighton. As Baldwin and Alkin continue to push boundaries, their story serves as an inspiring reminder of the importance of community and trust in the art world.
