There once lived a woman in a house by a beautiful lake in a village. She called herself Violet because she loved the color so much. Her house smelled like lavender and its walls were the color violet. She lived a quiet life but had a very profitable business.
Although Violet’s business was supposed to be a secret, most of the villagers knew what she was but would seldom admit to it. Her services were not cheap, and the villagers were not wealthy, but they somehow figured out how to pay her.
It was relatively early on a Monday morning when Violet was awoken by the ringing of her doorbell. She opened the door, and there stood a man handing her an envelope. She then handed it back to him and said, “I don’t conduct business like this. You must make an appointment. How dare you show up here unannounced?! Please leave.” She began to close the door, but before she could do so, the man began to beg her to let him in. She took pity on him, grabbed the envelope, and let him inside.
The man, Oscar, spent all his life preying on pity and the kindness of others. Oscar was the kind person who always apparently forgot their wallet when at a restaurant with others or would otherwise coerce people into paying for thing for him. In fact, he didn’t even have enough money to pay Violet, so to do so, he stole part of a tip left for a waiter when his friend, who had already paid the bill, got up to go to the bathroom.
People caught on to his antics, so his friendships and romantic relationships did not last long. Most recently, his girlfriend, Deandra, told him that she had a lover. He told her out of anger that he would not believe it even if he saw it, and before she could even respond, he hung up the phone and blocked her number, so that he would have the last word. It was very important for Oscar to always have the last word. Whenever a conversation seemed to be turning negative toward him, he would do things like this. Obviously, any type of criticism, even constructive, was nonexistent in Oscar’s world because he believed he was perfect.
Oscar sat down on Violet’s couch and began to explain his scenario. He told her how Deandra had a lover, and how he was glad she was out of his life but still had unfinished business with her. Two nights after they broke up, for a reason unbeknownst to him, he woke up in the middle of night and began walking along the lake. He then saw Deandra making love with her lover. The weird part was that while doing so, she stared right at him, and said, “Now do you believe it that you can see me?” She then began laughing hysterically, but the odd thing was that her lover did not even turn around or say anything, like he couldn’t hear it, which Oscar said was impossible.
Violet could see how hurt Oscar was while telling the story, so she understood why it was so important for him to get revenge. He told Violet that he wanted Deandra to never experience love again, even with her current lover.
Violet appeared to be in a pensive state for a few moments, and then agreed to grant Oscar’s request. She asked him if he had a photo of Deandra, and he handed one to her. She then told him to turn around because he could not witness what she was doing. He obeyed and just heard some chanting for a few minutes. Then she turned around and told him the spell was complete. Oscar thanked her and left happily.
A few days later, Violet was once again awoken by the ringing of the doorbell of yet another unexpected guest. This time it was Deandra. When Violet saw her, she didn’t want to answer the door but then laughed to herself thinking that maybe she would want to pay for some sort of “counter-spell,” so she decided to let her in.
Violet started the conversation by saying, “Let me guess…you’re upset with your ex-boyfriend…” Deandra responded, “In part, yes, but this is mostly about you.” Violet was a little surprised to hear that response. Deandra continued to say, “You see, I have a big problem with people like you making me believe they are people like me.” Violet was perplexed and asked her what she meant by that and sarcastically muttered under her breath, “What exactly are you?” Deandra stared directly at her with red pupils and said, “I am what you are not. I am a witch.” Paralyzed by what she just saw, and before she could move, Deandra put her hands around Violet’s neck and elevated her by a few feet.
Violet was gasping for air and felt helpless, but Deandra wanted her to hear these words: “I know what you are: a scammer just trying to make money from the misfortunes of others. Your time here has officially ended. You are to vacate this property by 6:00 a.m. and leave this village forever. I’ll be back here to make sure you have done so. If you disobey me, I will kill you, and if you tell anybody what I said to you, I will kill you. I see that your face is turning purple, so I think you should know one other thing about me. I always have the last word, so if you say even one word to me after I let you go, I will kill you.” Deandra started laughing, dropped Violet on the floor, and exited her house quietly.
Violet frantically looked at the clock and saw that it was 3:30 a.m. She packed everything she could, ran to her car, and started driving out of there well before 6 a.m. She drove out of that village and never returned.
The next day, Oscar was taking a walk by the lake and somehow got lost. This was so strange to him since he knew the area very well. Suddenly, he found himself in fields with high grass and didn’t know how to get out of there. He heard snorting, which was becoming louder and louder, but he couldn’t see where it was coming from, and then the land began to tremble. He was scared and wanted to run, but didn’t know where to go because all he could see was high grass everywhere he turned. There was a large rock ahead of him that he climbed, hoping for some visibility of the situation. When he looked around, he saw a herd of wild boars charging toward him. He began to run, but unfortunately, was never athletic, but he did try while excessively panting and attempting to cry out for help. Tears began to run down his face because he knew he was going to die, and there was no way to talk his way out of it.
Oscar’s cries for help did not go unanswered. He heard a woman’s voice shout, “Stop,” and all the boars listened and stopped at once. Oscar thought this was a divine intervention because he believed himself to be a great person. He soon realized that was not the case when he looked over and saw Deandra. He then said to her, “You saved me! Oh, how I knew you still loved me! And…” Before he could continue rambling, Deandra grabbed him and kissed him, but this was a very special kiss. She painlessly sucked his vocal cords out of his mouth, leaving him literally speechless. When she removed her lips from his, Oscar wanted to comment on how intense that kiss was, but he couldn’t speak! He started coughing, gagging, and turning red due to panic because he didn’t know what to do. Deandra then stared at him and said, “Now I have last word, and that is ‘goodbye.’”
